Why Travel Madeira?

Do you think you know Madeira? If you do, then you would know that this subtropical Atlantic outpost inhabits the very top of an enormous volcano which rises up from the sea bed. No wonder Madeira has won Best Island Destination 5 years running.

If you have written Madeira off as a destination for the golden oldies, don’t be fooled, the island really caters for everyone.

Madeira is a beautiful island found in the middle of the Atlantic, 400km north of Tenerife. Being shielded by the volcano which rises 6000 metres from the ocean (1865m which is above sea level) the island has a unique landscape.
Traveling from the UK is only 3.5 hours by plane and because of the subtropical climate you will be spoilt for choice by the amazing fruit and even more so by amazing weather all year around.

The island is compact and can be discovered within a few days, but don’t be fooled it has a lot to offer, especially great food and Madeira wine. Outdoor activities is one of the big attractions in Madeira and you can enjoy anything from walking and diving to fishing or just chilling and sunbathing.

If you are looking for a sandy beach, you will be disappointed however. Madeira is volcanic, and thus sand is rather uncommon. However all is not lost. There are two golden-sand beaches on the island: Calheta and Machico (both are artificial). For a day trip head to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo which is part of the Madeira archipelago which has a long natural golden-sand beach. Otherwise, you’ll have to be happy with pebbles all the way.

The weather in Madeira is amazing all year around. Sunny and warm weather, although the hottest and driest months and the best times to visit is definitely May – August. During these months average temperatures are in the mid-20s and only a handful of rainy days each month. With that in mind, you will still get average temperatures of 16-21ºC and 7-10 hours of daily sunshine the rest of the year and prices are a lot lower. So, if you want to save money, you know what to do.
